The Balancing Act

Work-life balance has been gaining momentum, a problem with no clear solution. I feel it is a continuous process and one needs to work consistently towards maintaining the equilibrium. Setting boundaries is at the nucleus of a healthy work-life balance and the need stems from an individual equally valuing their personal and professional lives.

Discipline, consistency and courage are key to setting boundaries. Courage especially because people often find it difficult to not only set boundaries but also communicate them with others.

A few things that one can do to begin with:

  • It all begins with a belief that leads to a mindset shift! Believe that your personal goals are as important as your professional goals.

  • Identify the areas at work where you need to set boundaries.

  • Communicate your boundaries and be committed to maintaining them.

  • Identify triggers that blur the boundaries that you created and work on those triggers.

  • Effective boundaries at work may require setting effective boundaries on the home front too owing to the interdependence between our personal and professional lives.

Lastly, work-life balance is a commitment we make to ourselves. While it may seem like an individual’s responsibility it takes an entire ecosystem at work to sustain the mindset of work-life balance.
